Dawgs hold off Arizona, earn win

With their newfound momentum and realization of the ability to win the close games, the Dawgs defeated Arizona (9-17, 3-12 Pac-10) on the road 60-58 last night.

It wasn't exactly an easy journey. After the Dawgs kept the game to a tie at the end of the first half (28-28) they soared ahead to a 12-point lead in the second, but gave nearly all of it up at the end, mostly on the strength of Arizona guard Ashley Whisonant's 23 points.

After getting to within two, Whisonant threw up a final three-point attempt with the clock nearing zero, but her shot failed to fall as the Huskies held on for the win.

“This team is steadily getting better. Earlier, we play these close games and we don't come up with victories, but now we're on a 3-0 run," UW coach Tia Jackson said on KKNW Radio.

Home-rental evictions up

Maricopa County constables are evicting more renters of single-family homes as they struggle to pay rent in the faltering economy or as foreclosures strike their landlords. The tenants cut across all demographics and properties, from luxury homes in north Scottsdale to affordable homes in the suburbs. Some tenants are blindsided by the evictions, unaware the home fell into foreclosure even as they have continued to pay rent to homeowners. Other tenants have failed to pay rent and have already boxed their belongings, waiting for a constable to bang on the front door. .

Canada failing its obligations to children: UNICEF

But it will require people to truly see the problems, not just sit at home railing against a system that has the ability to provide education, training, and more today than ever, employment.

This lady could have been a better person and parent. But the cycle of despair and self-defeat is devastating. She needed to be put on a better path, even if she had to be dragged there.

Airport-Pulling Road accident seriously injures two

Two people were seriously injured in a three-car accident Friday evening on the northbound lanes of Airport-Pulling Road in North Naples. The lanes were temporarily shut down near the intersection of Winding Oaks Way, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

According to an FHP report, Glennerose Willoughby, 79, failed to slow down while heading northbound on Airport-Pulling. As a result, his 2003 Toyota SUV rear-ended two cars stopped at a red light at Winding Oaks Way. The SUV overturned onto its left side, and North Naples Fire Department officials said they had to extradite the two from the vehicle.

Glennerose Willoughby was transported with serious injuries to Lee Memorial Hospital, while his passenger, Sandra Willoughby, 58, was taken to North Collier Hospital with serious injuries.

How to save big bucks at the last minute

Ah, last-minute travel. To hear the online travel sites describe it, it's all about theater weekends in New York, romantic getaways in Napa and beach time in the Bahamas.

Yeah, right. If you're like most people, the only time you travel at the last minute is when work or family matters demand it. Either way, you just know you're going to pay through the nose for it.

At least that's what I thought until last week when a family emergency required us to travel from Seattle to San Diego on short notice. As I happily discovered, you can save big bucks on short notice — if you know where to look.

Pawlenty rips DFL for gas tax increase

Governor Pawlenty ripped DFL lawmakers on Tuesday for over-riding his veto of the transportation package, which comes with a $6.6 billion price tag and a gasoline tax increase of at least five and a half cents.

The Governor predicted the tax increase would be a big November election issue, and that it could lead to Republicans re-taking control of both the state House and Senate.

Pawlenty says he expects a "tax revolt" among "hard working Minnesotans" against the gas tax.

"They had their day yesterday," Pawlenty said. "But now taxpayers will have their day."

He also said the bill will cause further budget problems, when the state issues its budget forecast on Thursday. That forecast was already expected to show a shortfall.

The Minnesota Legislature voted Monday to override Gov.

Arizona's film industry shows signs of growth

A new TV show will be using the streets of downtown Phoenix as a stand-in for Los Angeles over the next few weeks, but it wasn't the architecture or the weather that drew it here. The show's producers came for Arizona's entertainment-industry tax incentives, and they're not the only people looking east from Hollywood toward Arizona. TV and film productions spent an estimated $208 million in Arizona in 2007, and 2008 may be an even bigger year. .

Turkey's most expensive site: Pergamon

The ancient city of Pergamon is perched on a mountain top in relative anonymity and within shouting distance of unsightly mining projects. Breathtaking in detail and size, today's Bergama boasts structures dating back to 2000 BC. The remains of this advanced civilization 150 miles north zmir tell tales of survival by way of fidelity to Rome, military triumph over the Celts, art development shared throughout the region and a literary tradition evident in its library that held more than 200,000 volumes. But today a transportation racket combine with a lack of information and modern accommodations to make this a quick stop for most, if visitors bother to come at all.

The Attalids ruled with intelligence and generosity. Many documents survive showing how the Attalids would support the growth of towns through sending in skilled artisans and by remitting taxes.
