Lemurs' Evolutionary History May Shed Light On Our Own

They also resolved the relationships among species within the remaining four evolutionary lineages, which includes a diverse cast of characters: the sifakas, named for the hissing "shee-fak" sound they make; the sportive lemurs, which are strictly nocturnal; the mouse lemurs, the smallest of all living primates; and the many so-called "true lemurs," including the blue-eyed black lemur (one of only three blue-eyed primates in the world) and the ringtailed lemur, which is often found in zoos.

"By throwing this much data at the problem, we have absolutely confirmed, beyond any statistical doubt, that the spectacular array of lemurs all descended from a single ancestral species," said Yoder, noting that lemurs account for about 20 percent of primate species and live on less than one percent of the earth’s surface.

Painting found in trash sells for 1 mln dlrs

I saw it on the sidewalk among black plastic garbage bags," she told AFP ahead of the sale. "I passed my way and had my coffee, but a voice inside kept telling me to go back and take the painting. So I stopped reading my book and I went back and took the painting, which had a very bad frame but was in perfect condition." The work, with bold strokes of red, purple and yellow, was bought in 1977 by a Texas couple who put it in storage while they moved house. They noticed the painting was missing in 1987 when picking up their belongings at the warehouse. Where the painting went for the next 16 years remains a mystery, but for several months after discovering it, Gibson kept it on the wall in her apartment. Tipped off by a friend that the painting could be valuable, Gibson started investigating only to find on the Internet that the work had been featured on US television show "The Antiques Roadshow" in a segment on missing paintings.

Sean Taylor Dies Day After Shooting

Guard Pete Kendall said it will difficult to prepare for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills. Asked if he wanted to play the game, Kendall said: "I'm going to wait and see."

"At this point, I'm just trying to process everything that's going on," he said. "There are guys on this team who know Sean much better than I do. My thoughts are first and foremost with Sean and his family, and I'm concerned after that with my teammates who really are going to be struggling with this thing."

Five people, gunman killed in shooting at NIU lecture hall

A former Northern Illinois University student opened fire at the DeKalb campus Thursday and then shot himself, leaving six dead and 15 wounded.

At least two of the victims are from our area: Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville, and Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Elmhurst. Two other victims identifed by DeKalb County Coroner Dennis J. Miller are Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero and Julianna Gehant, 32, of Meridan.

The shooter had been a graduate student in sociology at NIU in the spring of 2007, but was not currently enrolled there. The gunman, whom police did not identify, had had no contact with DeKalb police, NIU President John G. Peters said.

The classroom instructor was identified today as graduate student Joseph Peterson, who suffered a shoulder wound in the attack.

Students in the classroom say a skinny man clad in black and holding a shotgun burst into class shortly after 3 p.m.

Ski Town USA’s local bar

Tugboat owners Lamb and Hank Edwards have every intention of carrying on, but when developers come to tear down Ski Time Square next summer, it could be last call for the Tugboat as you know and love it. The truth is, they say, they don't know what to expect when the old commercial strip is redeveloped.

Edwards says he and Lamb feel dated every time a former bartender, cook or cocktail server shows up in the saloon with a 21-year-old son or daughter in tow, ready to celebrate a rite of passage.

“That helps Larry and I appreciate how old we are," Edwards said. “We're proud of the fact that we're constantly hearing from old employees like Spanish (Susan English) and Big Kid (Mike Soergel)."

The Tugboat has become virtually synonymous with Ski Town USA.

COTTM gears up as Chinese outbound tourism soars

As China continues to establish itself as the world's new major global economic power, the country is demonstrating a very assertive stance in the development of its industries, travel and tourism included. Chinese outbound tourism peaked to an incredible 700% increase compared with the data of 10 years ago.

The economic boom has provided the Chinese with higher disposable income; better diplomatic relations and relaxed travel regulations have given the Chinese more opportunities to travel to many foreign destinations. According to the World Tourism Organisation, by the end of year 2007 there will be nearly 37.5 million of Chinese tourists to travel abroad, a remarkable 17% increase since year 2006, and it is set to reach a staggering 100 million per year by 2020. This current growth rate of outbound Chinese tourists has now outpaced the average world travel.

Backyard nuptials require proper planning

Frugal couples might think a backyard wedding will spare them some of the stress and expense of tying the knot.

But experts warn that poorly planned home nuptials can be just as nerve-racking as a fairy-tale wedding at a chichi chateau.

"I would never recommend doing (a wedding) at home just to save money," says Michelle Gillette, owner of a Denver party-planning company. "People who choose to have their ceremonies at home would have to have a romantic attachment to that space because it's more difficult to do than people think."

The upside to home weddings is they provide the opportunity to really personalize the event.

Karen and Jim Gruber's wedding guests arrived at the couple's Denver home in late 2005 thinking they were attending a Christmas party.

Your Health This Week The shocking end to that big diabetes study ...

Remarkably, these benefits continued for many years even after patients relaxed the blood sugar controls. Another large and important study of the effects of blood sugar control on type 2 diabetics in Britain showed a substantial reduction in most complications, though little or no cardiovascular effect. A few earlier and much smaller studies suggested that blood sugar control for type 2 diabetics might have harmful cardiovascular consequences, but the results of the large British study were very reassuring on that score. That's why the ACCORD results were so shocking.

Conclusion (or lack thereof): Alas, we will probably be grasping for an explanation for some time. The cardiovascular problems showed up while the study was ongoing and still await detailed consideration. That is still probably a year or two away.
