| Task force traces gun used in fatal armored-car case
The gun that was used to kill two armored-car guards in an aborted Oct. 4 holdup has been traced to two employees at an airport car rental agency, Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham announced yesterday. Abraham said an investigation by the Gun Violence Task Force showed that two men, Jason Lighty, 26, of the 6200 block of Catharine Street, and Eric Benson, 25, of the 1500 bock of Ellsworth Street, had possession of the gun that was used in the robbery attempt that resulted in the deaths of Loomis guards William Widmaier, 65, and Joseph Alullo, 55. Lighty and Benson have been charged with violating illegal firearms transfer laws as well as conspiracy. The task force was still investigating how the 9mm handgun wound up in the possession of Mustafa Ali, the man accused of killing Widmaier and Alullo.
LIVE from the CNN Rental Car Center!
I've been told that CNN has the best political team on television. (That honor used to go to the Clintons.) So tonight I'm watching CNN. Wolf Blitzer is working the big board, crunching the numbers. Anderson Cooper, meanwhile, is consulting the panel of experts (David Gergen, Jeff Toobin and Gloria Borger, among them) for analysis. The experts sit side-by-side behind laptops, along tables that look more like counters. My snarky friend Jeremy says they look like cashiers at Chipotle. That's a cheap shot. It's obvious that the arrangement is modeled after an airport rental car center. It's a clean look and it's handily hierarchical: The A-team (as in Avis team) includes Gergen, Toobin and Borger. The B-team (as in Budget) tonight includes Paul Begala, Bill Bennett and Carl Bernstein. This is a pretty strong B-team.
D.M. airport plans good show amid post-caucus surge
Des Moines International Airport officials plan no circus acts Friday, but a roving magician will entertain journalists and political organizers as they leave Iowa and its 2008 caucuses in a vapor trail. Airport and Transportation Security Administration officials say it will be all hands on deck on Friday and Saturday to handle a probably 50 percent surge in passengers leaving the state's largest airport. They're keen to put on a good show because 2004's departures were marred by long lines at the security-screening area, frayed nerves all around and rental cars that went missing for days. .

Local Gas Station Charging Over $4 Per Gallon Near OIA
ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a break for the holidays, but gas prices are ready to rise again. One local gas station, though, is already charging customers much more than others. RAW INTERVIEW: Manager Defends $4.49 Per Gallon Customers at the independent gas station near the Orlando International Airport are paying $4.49 a gallon. Some of the customers don't know the price they're paying until it's too late. There are no large signs showing the prices at the station. Most customers are tourists returning rental cars before catching flights at Orlando International Airport. Not all believe it's an honorable way to conduct business. "It's not fair. It's definitely price gouging during the holiday season," said tourist Les Lazarus. Even at $4.49 a gallon for regular, most of the pumps were busy at Suncoast Energys on Friday morning.
Trembley Enjoys Driver's Seat
Long before he settled into his office at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, Dave Trembley received a distinct reminder that this spring will be unlike any other. "I went to the airport yesterday to pick up my rental," he said Wednesday. "I'm used to getting a little matchbox car." He drove away in a huge Cadillac, one of the many fringe benefits of being manager of the Baltimore Orioles. After spending 20 years as a minor league manager, Trembley finally made it to the big leagues last spring as Baltimore's bullpen coach. Then, on June 18, he became interim manager after the Orioles fired Sam Perlozzo. Trembley had the interim tag removed in August and will begin his first spring training camp as a big league manager Thursday. He spent much of the offseason preparing for the assignment, and already has Day 1 mapped out to the minute.
OIA receives go-ahead to charge new rental-car tax
It's about to get more expensive to rent a car at Orlando International Airport. Board members of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the agency that runs OIA, voted Wednesday to adopt a $2.50-a-day tax on car rentals. The "customer facility charge," which would be capped at five days, could add as much as $12.50 to a customer's bill. Backers said the tax will raise money for $102.6 million worth of rental-car upgrades planned at the airport during the next few years, including additional parking spaces, fueling stations and car-wash bays. .
Yeager runway to close to make room for hangars
Officials at Yeager Airport plan to close a runway to make more room for general aviation hangars and potential new aviation-related businesses. The airport's governing board voted Wednesday to shut down the 4,750-foot crosswind runway, used mainly by smaller private aircraft. The closure would also help the 130th Airlift Wing proceed with development plans that include building two new hangars and adding ramp space to allow four additional C-130s to be based at Air National Guard facility. The idea of closing Runway 15-33 to create additional development space for the mountaintop airport is a key component in Yeager's master plan update, now in its draft stage. "We are now parking as many commercial airplanes as we can at the terminal area, although the new rental car facility, when complete, will give us one more space," Yeager Airport Director Rick Atkinson said.

Car Rental Costs Going Up March 1st
Mobile's latest annexation means car rental rates will go up starting March 1st. Last month, the City Council voted unanimously to annex all of the Mobile Regional Airport's land, extending the city limits west to Snow Road. The higher city sales tax takes effect March 1. The sales tax rate for businesses on airport property will increase from 7.5 percent to 9 percent, while the sales tax rate for businesses in the newest portions of the police jurisdiction -- which stretches three miles beyond the airport -- will rise from 5.5 percent to 7.5 percent. City officials estimate the city will receive an extra $1 million a year from the sales tax bump at the airport. If businesses have any questions, please contact the City of Mobile at 251.208.7462. .
It’s official: Rockford lands Ireland flights
Twice-weekly flights between Rockford and Shannon, Ireland, will start June 26, according to Kenny Tours. The Maryland-based company signed a deal Thursday with North American Airlines to fly the route through Aug. 31, said Bob Nay, Kenny Tours' director of sales and marketing. The flights will be Thursdays and Sundays. Round-trip airfares start at $888, including taxes and airport fees. Six-night motor coach tours, including airfare and hotels, start at $1,489. Six-night bed-and-breakfast stays, including airfare and car rental, start at $1,489. The seasonal model is similar to Chicago Rockford International Airport's other international route, Apple Vacations' weekly flights to Cancun, Mexico, in the winter. But the Ireland flights will be on Boeing 757s with almost 200 seats, which would be the largest plane used on a regularly scheduled passenger route from Rockford.
'Waiting lot' opens at Lihue Airport
A free "waiting lot" opened Friday at Lihue Airport on Kauai for motorists to park and wait for passengers on arriving flights. The lot, which is located along Hoolimalima Place next to the car rental facilities, will be open from 5 a.m. to close of business day. Airport officials believe the waiting lot will make it convenient for those picking up arriving passengers and reduce traffic congestion near the baggage claim area. Modeled after similar waiting lots at Honolulu International Airport and Mainland airports, motorists can use the lot to wait until they're called on their cell phones by the passengers they're picking up, no longer having to drive in circles around the airport. Users can wait up to an hour on the lot. Commercial vehicles are not allowed.
